 Position Summary:

The School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy at UCD is a dynamic, research-driven school with a clear focus on delivering excellent teaching programmes including professionally accredited undergraduate and graduate programmes in planning. It is ranked in the global top 150 for ‘Built Environment (QS Global Rankings), ranking number 1 in Ireland while the University is ranked in the global top 50 and number 1 in Ireland in the QS Global Sustainability rankings. UCD’s Planning school is an internationally renowned centre of excellence and a key contributor to European and global planning education and its wider research agenda. As well as offering a Masters in Regional and Urban Planning, Masters in Urban Design and Planning, and BSc in City Planning & Environmental Policy, the School also runs a successful undergraduate BSc programme in Transportation, City Planning and Environmental Policy at Chang’an Dublin International College (CDIC). Applications are invited for a full-time (3 year) Teaching Fellow position in Regional and Urban Planning at UCD. The successful candidate will have expertise in urban design and will be asked to contribute to the delivery of the School’s planning programmes, particularly design-based modules. The post will also involve contributing to the administration and management of student internships (in planning and/or urban design) which have become an increasingly popular feature of our planning programmes at UCD. This post is targeted at professionals working in industry or academia at the forefront of urban design and/or at the interface of urban design and planning.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties of the successful candidate will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • Actively contribute to teaching programmes as directed by the Head of Planning. Teaching will primarily focus on urban design. Inter alia, this will involve module delivery (classroom/studio teaching/workshops/tutorials/fieldtrips), assessment and grading, content development, and associated administration.
  • Bring professional practice-based experience into the classroom and studio to expose students to urban design and planning practice requirements.
  • Supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate dissertations (minor theses) and student internships.
  • Contribute to the administration and management of student internships at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Develop and maintain professional links with appropriate professional bodies, industry employers and external agencies where appropriate.
  • Involvement in the dissemination and communication efforts of the School/Unit, through exhibitions, events etc.
  • Undertake other appropriate duties as directed by the Head of School in line with the contract of employment.

Fixed Salary: €45,000 Per Annum

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

Mandatory:

Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree qualification in the architecture, planning and urban design field.
  • Evidence of significant ongoing professional experience in urban design.
  • Evidence of contribution to the designed environment. This could include scholarship, innovative practice, or active involvement in the professional institutes.
  • A demonstrable capacity/aptitude for teaching at university level in urban design.
  • An ability to contribute substantively to the design, delivery and assessment of various modes of module delivery, including studio and seminars, and both written and project-based design work.
  • An ability to contribute to the administration and management of student internships including relationship building with industry leaders in urban design and planning practice.
  • A demonstrated ability and willingness to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communicational, interpersonal, and organisational skills with demonstrable capacity to work on personal initiative as well as part of a team.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate-level degree qualification in urban design and/or planning.
  • Professionally-accredited degree qualifications in both (a) architecture and (b) planning (accredited by the relevant professional institute(s): RIAI, RTPI, IPI, or other international equivalent).
  • Substantial experience of studio teaching in urban design at third level.
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach across a range of areas, and to teach in inter- and multi- disciplinary contexts.
