Research Programme
“WEB SERVICES FOR FLOOD EARLY WARNING IN THE SAHEL (ACRONYM SLAPIS)”
Content and finality of the research program
The Research Program concerns the organization of the database and innovative web service of the three years project "Local Early Flood Warning System in the Sahel" led by DIST and funded by the AICS. The database contains hourly flow and water level data as measured by hydrometers placed in the Gorouol, Dargol, and Sirba right bank tributaries of the middle Niger River; rainfall as predicted and as recorded; estimated flood limits for each return time in the main riparian locations; and potential damages for each flood scenario. The web service consists of informing via smartphone and e-mail the expected level of flooding and the damage that could be generated in riparian localities. The service is aimed at ministries of civil defense and hydraulics, national weather agencies, regions, and municipalities affected by potential flooding. The purpose is to provide information useful for issuing early flood warnings to all localities.
