AESOP is pleased to share the publication of the fourth edition of Governo del territorio e pianificazione spaziale(Territorial Governance and Spatial Planning), authored by Umberto Janin Rivolin, Luca Gaeta and Luigi Mazza, and published by CittàStudi.
The textbook, written in Italian, provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, instruments and institutional dimensions of spatial planning and territorial governance.
About the Book
Human societies organise and control space to establish themselves and coexist over time. This involves distributing activities and buildings, distinguishing between private and collective spaces, facilitating mobility, and regulating the development of buildings and infrastructure.
Within this framework, spatial planning is understood as the technical discipline concerned with developing the tools and methods used to configure space, including settlement models, plans, land-use regulations and projects.
Territorial governance, meanwhile, refers to the decision-making processes through which political authorities assign rights to use and transform land, drawing on the instruments of spatial planning.
At a time of growing uncertainty and challenges affecting planning culture, both academically and professionally, the book offers a critical reflection on the social, economic and institutional rationale of territorial governance and spatial planning systems.
Through the examination of historical and contemporary case studies from Italy and other countries, the volume explores the characteristics, functions and contents of planning instruments and governance arrangements.
