On October 10th, ERSA, RSA and AESOP organized a session during the European Week of Regions and Cities, in Brussels, under the title - The end of the trade-offs? Competing and converging for European democracy.

The session explored ways in which regions can compete and at the same time converge, considering recent developments in flagship EU policies, such as the twin transitions and the EU Green Deal. It also considered the possible impacts of convergence and competitiveness policies in relation to geographies of happiness and of discontent, people and places ‘left behind’, and the implications for European democracy.

The event succeeded in promoting debate and inspiring the discussion on convergence and competitiveness in the context of the EU. Speakers were Andrés Rodriguez Pose (London School of Economics), Franziska Sielker (TU Wien)and Dimitrios Ballas (U Groningen).

The European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek) is the biggest annual Brussels-based event dedicated to cohesion policy. It has grown to become a neutral platform to discuss common challenges for Europe's regions and cities by bringing together a diverse community of speakers and participants.
