We are delighted to announce that the AESOP Council of Representatives, meeting in Liverpool on 12 March 2025, has selected the University of Birmingham (UK) as the host of the AESOP 2027 Congress and PhD Workshop.

Congress Theme:
From Grey to Green – Planning and the De-Carbonisation of the City

European and global cities face increasing pressure to become greener—both literally and metaphorically. The 2027 Congress will explore how spatial planning can support the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient urban futures through themes such as:

  • Circular economies

  • Climate adaptation and mitigation

  • Renewable energy

  • Nature-based solutions and sustainable urbanism

The University of Birmingham offers an ideal setting with:

  • A compact, walkable, and accessible “green” campus

  • A commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2045

  • 100% renewable electricity for all venues

  • Strong public transport links and cycling infrastructure

  • Sustainable catering and waste management policies

  • Environmentally certified hotels for delegates

PhD Workshop Theme:
Researching the Grey-to-Green City and City-Region

The PhD Workshop will provide a stimulating and supportive environment for early-stage researchers to reflect on how spatial planning research can engage with the challenges of urban de-carbonisation. The University of Birmingham, an approved PhD training provider, will host the event in a tranquil and inspiring setting—potential venues include countryside retreat centres in Leicestershire or the Lake District.

We look forward to the exciting programme ahead and thank the Local Organising Committee for their commitment and vision.

Warm congratulations once again to the University of Birmingham!
