Track 17 ETHICS AND JUSTICE

Track chairs: Stefano Cozzolino, Claudia Basta, Mark Scherner

The ambition to transition from grey to green by providing innovative responses to current socio-spatial challenges cannot avoid confronting fundamental questions of planning ethics and justice. However, discussions often jump directly to transformative scenarios and new disciplinary paradigms, while the ethical perspectives and values that underpin new narratives and planning actions tend to be overlooked. This track aims to engage critically and systematically with foundational questions such as:

  • What values do planning (practices and scholarly debates) tend to
prioritise, and what do they tend to overlook?
  • What implicit values and goals inform the identification of the
“right” trajectory to pursue, and which should be left behind?
  • Which situated rights may conflict with universal aspirations, and
    vice versa?
  • What role do institutions, markets, practitioners, and academics play
in the spatial distribution of the transition’s harms and benefits?
  • Are the consequences of the green transition inherently just, or are
trade-offs in terms of justice inevitable?

We invite participants to contribute to the thematic discussion of the track by offering perspectives and analytical contributions on questions that are crucial to understanding contemporary planning. The track welcomes contributions that explore and problematise the ethical and justice dimensions of planning in the context of the global pursuit of more sustainable, green, and climate-friendly urban places, as well as the often-unexpected conflicts and dilemmas that accompany this transition.

Keywords: (in)justice, ethics, values, fairness, dilemmas, recognition.
