The goal of this seminar is to share information and tips on how to make a good paper review. Academic writing is one of the key skills that is taught in planning schools at the doctoral level, but reviewing papers is lacking. After successfully publishing one’s research papers, young scholars are often invited to join the team of reviewers and frequently come here unprepared. Additionally, by knowing how the review process works and what things are emphasized, young scholars can improve their writing and presentation of research results further.

This seminar consists of three parts. In the first part, prof. Dominic Stead will have a short keynote speech about how to make a good paper review. The second part is a roundtable discussion on the following topics:

  • What are the tips when making paper reviews?
  • What to look for in a good paper? What qualities does a good paper need to have?
  • How to evaluate the paper quality and how to give useful comments?
  • How to approach a bad paper? How to say no when the paper is not of sufficient quality?
  • How to become a reviewer?

The roundtable consists of Prof. Dr. Ayda Eraydin (Middle East Technical University), Prof. Dominic Stead (Aalto University), Assoc. prof. Nadia Caruso (Politecnico di Torino) and Dr. Christian Lamker (University of Groningen).

The final part is an open discussion where anyone can write their question or share their experience with the participants.
