In an academic career spanning 40 years Professor David Shaw has made an outstanding contribution to the field of international planning research and an outstanding contribution to the life of the University of Liverpool which he joined in 1994. David is also a well known figure in the AESOP community and was the Chair of the Local Organising Committe for the AESOP Congress 2009 which took place in Liverpool in the centenary year of the Department of Civic Design. He has acted as an advisor to local, regional and national governments around the globe and to the EU and UN.  

David's research and international experience and innovative teaching have made Liverpool a leading centre for research and teaching on the international dimensions of planning.  In 2023 he co-authored a new book on the subject International Planning Studies - an introduction David has also made an outstanding contribution to the internationalisation agenda of the University of Liverpool founding links with institutions in other countries across the globe. 

David will retire from the University of Liverpool later in 2024. On Wednesday 26 June 2024 he will present a valedictory lecture in words, pictures and song. With ‘gnarly dimensionality’ and ‘beguiling robustness’ he will reflect on the privileges afforded to him as a planning academic and provide some thoughts about the importance and value of spatial planning in an ever changing and complex world.
