We start with an overview of European integration in relation to spatial planning. There are different planning models in Europe, in particular the 'comprehensive integrated approach' and the 'regional economic approach', the latter operating through state intervention aimed at removing imbalances between regions. Many EU policies are designed to reduce disparities, e.g. regional policy, and the policy to promote Trans- European Networks (TENs). Could and, indeed, should, these policies be co-ordinated with a view to their impact on spatial development ? Or is such co-ordination rather a matter for the Member States and/or their regional subdivisions ? ...
