The Ecocity World Summit 2009 is organized by Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
Since the second half of the 20th century, degradation of global ecological balances led by environmental pollution due to the unconsciously overuse and consumption of the natural resources, has become a major problem. Clearly, most of the natural resources, being foundation stones of economic development and growth, are vulnerable assets and it is almost impossible to recuperate them. So, today, it is an obligation to apply the environmental socio-economic development policies in the context of sustainability. In other words, the sustainability and the existence of life on earth depend on the development of urgent global policies which are truly based on harmonious ecological and economic ethics. With these reasons, the theme of the Ecocity 2009 Conference, "Global Environmental Balances", focuses on finding new approaches towards a new ecologically oriented world order for future generations. Besides underlining the importance of eco-thinking, ethics, eco-politics and the methods to reach an ecological awareness, issues such as spatial planning policies and natural resource management, energy provision technologies, eco-architecture and design and environmentally friendly building materials will also be discussed by scientists, politicians and environment experts in the perspective of the third millennium.
