In 2009 the annual Planning Research Conference will be hosted by Newcastle University. The event will have the theme of Unequal Places, although, as is traditional, the conference invites papers on all aspects of planning research throughout the globe. With the theme, however, we hope to visit long-standing debates concerning in whose favour planning systems operate. We know more now of the inter-relationships between policy interventions in the fields of planning, environmental policy, education, health, design, infrastructure management etc. We know something of how resources and difficulties are unevenly distributed and how interventions can compound such problems and exacerbate concentrations of advantage and disadvantage. The concept of territorial cohesion is one way of accessing such concerns.
