The annual PhD workshop is an event, organised under the auspices of the annual AESOP congress. The PhD workshop normally comprises of approximately 40 PhD students who are selected on the basis of abstract submissions. The selection committee comprises representatives from both the YA coordination team and the AESOP congress local organising committee. Limited financial aid is made available to assist workshop attendance, The YA allocates financial grants to a limited number of applicants on the basis of financial need, as justified during the application process. Previous PhD Workshops took place in Bristol (2006), Paestu/Naplesm (2007) Jotunheimen National Park, Norway (2008), Manchester (2009), Seilli Island (2010), Kostelec nad Cernymi Lesy near Prague (2011), Izmir (2012), and Belfast (2013). The 2014 AESOP/YA PhD Workshop will be held in Uilenberg, approximately 2km from Delft in the Netherlands.
PhD Workshop 2014, Uilenberg, Delft The aim of the PhD workshop is to create a supportive and intensive event over four days, which will provide opportunities to share experiences and give constructive feedback to each PhD candidate from both tutors and other candidates. Six senior mentors will act as facilitators to guide presentations and lead critical reflection by candidates. The workshop will be held between Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 July 2014, at Uilenburg, a rural conference centre 2km from the edge of Delft. The programme will include plenary sessions with interactive lectures and discussion and small group meetings where PhD candidate work will be examined in detail. We will be covering the nature of a PhD, comparing varying forms; research design, methods and methodologies; the use of theoretical frameworks in planning research; dissemination and publication; the relationship between supervisor and PhD candidate; ethical issues in research and societal relevance career development and post-doctoral work. The event will provide plenty of opportunity for social interaction among the participants and help to establish contacts that will endure long after the event. We will be able to accommodate 40 participants and the venue is suitable for people with disabilities.
