Regeneration and densification in New Brighton, Wirral Peninsula
Tour Leaders: Sebastian Dembski and Mark Smith, University of Liverpool
New Brighton is a seaside resort on the opposite side of the River Mersey that was founded in the mid-19th century initially for the gentry, but soon became a popular destination for Liverpool and industrial towns in Lancashire. With the advent of cheap package holidays abroad, New Brighton experienced a steep decline, which was captured in the famous photographic essay by Martin Parr entitled The Last Resort (1986). More recently, however, New Brighton has experienced a gentle renaissance with residential densification and regeneration of the seafront and Victoria Road. This city tour will visit some of the sites of residential densification and explore the cultural heart of New Brighton and its street art.
