AESOP 2025 HOS MEETING | CITY TOURS

Northern Lights

09:30 – 12:30
Liverpool City Centre Northern Fringe and Waterfront Redevelopment
Tour Organisers: Liverpool City Council and Partners

Since the 1980s there has been a process of regeneration and redevelopment in central Liverpool focussed on the southern central docks (e.g. the Albert Dock and Kings Dock) and the city centre core (e.g. the Liverpool One district). There are now plans to extend this development dynamic northwards into areas covered by the Liverpool Waters project and adjoining areas. Some progress has been made over recent years by multiple partners including Liverpool City Council, large private developers such as Peel Land and Property, and smaller private sector and community interest stakeholders. This tour will visit some of the sites which are being redeveloped (Liverpool Waters; the Ten Streets Creative District; Bramley Moore Dock and Stanley Dock) and hear from some of those involved in driving this change.

The last resort?

March 14: 09:30 – 12:30
Regeneration and densification in New Brighton, Wirral Peninsula
Tour Leaders: Sebastian Dembski and Mark Smith, University of Liverpool

New Brighton is a seaside resort on the opposite side of the River Mersey that was founded in the mid-19th century initially for the gentry, but soon became a popular destination for Liverpool and industrial towns in Lancashire. With the advent of cheap package holidays abroad, New Brighton experienced a steep decline, which was captured in the famous photographic essay by Martin Parr entitled The Last Resort (1986). More recently, however, New Brighton has experienced a gentle renaissance with residential densification and regeneration of the seafront and Victoria Road. This city tour will visit some of the sites of residential densification and explore the cultural heart of New Brighton and its street art.
